Golshifteh Farahani

Golshifteh Farahani is a Persian actress and Campaigner born in  Tehran, Iran on the 10th of July 1983. Golshifteh is an actress and has stared in many films and shows such as: Extraction, Pirates of the Caribbean, About Elly and Body of lies which had caused a major controversy in Iran and the government had thought that Golshifteh had ben working with America by spreading American propaganda and with Golshifteh appearing in the film without a Hajib and therefore, the Iranian authorities deemed her to be violating one of the laws of Islam in their belief as a result she had been exiled from working or visiting Iran from 2009 and has been staying in France.

Golshifteh Farahani has always been someone I had looked up to as a Bahrani-Persian child and having to live a large amount of time in Iran, I have faced many challenges that she had faced as well. Such as having to act and behave a certain way due to being a girl because of how the Government were applying their views of Islam and how oppressed women in Iran were, Not being allowed to be out in public without a Hajib, many women not wanting to be out without a male member of their family due to the high risk of danger they could face especially late at night. The way the families in Iran imply their ways of living being influenced by the government even if it meant it was a toxic and harmful environment. Golshifteh has always been in support of freedom rights to everyone in Iran and especially the freedom rights of women. She had spoken many times about her experiences, some that I relate to, Golshifteh had appeared on a ted talk to discuss the later matter in which she urges everyone to take a stand against violence inflicted on innocent people around the world and Iran (Golshifteh Farahani: "Woman, Life, Freedom" in Iran — and what it means for the rest of the world | TED Talk). As well as appearing on Ted, she had also appeared on Bazaar stating “When the Iranian women were protesting last year, my body, my muscles, told me that I needed to be the bridge between Iran and the western world.”

As well as facing many challenges Golshifteh had and will always be Proud to be Persian. In an interview she had stated that " art had been my path and of course I'm coming from the country (Iran) my roots are there so no matter branch is going towards the sky are coming from those roots and I'm connected to all those people in Iran. That is my biological mother (Iran) and I'm very proud" She had also stated that Iran is a part of her, which I think she had spoken amazingly about how even though she had been exiled that she is still proud of her culture and heritage in which I relate to due to being a half Persian woman, I believe that being proud of where you are from, no matter the current state of said country, is really important and to learn and embrace it. As a result I had chosen her to represent the idea of identity, as she talks about being Persian and coming from a very difficult background and keeping the same identity throughout and not willing to change who she is as a person no matter what the media or anyone tells and she is willing to risk it all to be her true self and support and be the voice of others all around the world.

When it comes to my identity I seem to struggle sometimes coming from two different backgrounds, two different cultures can get confusing. However, with the confusion I am still proud to be from both of those nationalities. As well as those, I think my family are what  had shaped me to be the person I am today and that no matter what happens they are always there to support me. Furthermore, I believe that one of the most important thing about my identity is that I tend to focus on being able to make money and support my Family back home in Iran to be able to live a comfortable and happy life. As well as having many important and serious things to focus on, when I have the free time I tend to enjoy going out with my friends and attending concerts.
